The Mäkärä study site is located ~15 km NW of Vuotso, Sodankylä, Finnish Lapland. Vuotso can is accessed from Rovaniemi, the unofficial capital of Finnish Lapland, via a ~2 hour drive along the E75 that continues to Utsjoki, in the very north of Finland.
Whilst the Mäkärä prospect area can be accessed by gravel roads, across the region, a number of smaller tracks that may be traversed by foot are present, allowing all-round good access for quick, efficient research. The terrain of the Mäkärä region is relatively flat with variably distributed peat bogs that can make several square Kms inaccessible.
